Volkswagen: Red Flashy Thingy

“Beware the Confidence” is the tag and the premise of this campaign – Ogilvy (Cape Town) created this hilarious ad for the new Volkswagen Polo which comes with a number of new features that “will make you feel more confident than ever”. The TVC is guided by narrator Bob Dunsworth and was created by Bladeworks Post Production.

I love love love the kind of ads that use a consequential narrative – they always make me laugh. Also, it’s refreshing to see an automative ad that stands out from the rest.

Volkswagen: Laughing Horses

I’ve discovered a gem – an ad for VW’s ‘Park Assist’ feature from their Tiguan model campaign (2016). The advert is by Grabarz & Partner (Hamburg), and proves that there’s no excuse for boring car ads!

There’s an interesting post which mentions how the ad went viral after testing it before release:

The video proved to be one of the best automotive videos ever tested, scoring significantly above average on key criteria like enjoyment, brand fit and brand appeal. As a result, Volkswagen released the video on Youtube.de where it was watched over 2 million times and uploaded by others. The video’s success prompted Volkswagen to use it on TV, and at last count the video had received over 36 million views across all platforms.

Audi: Drive Progress

Progress is in every decision we make, every technology we invent, every vehicle we build. It’s our past, our future, our reason to exist. Audi of America is committed to equal pay for equal work. A 2016 report by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee found that women were paid 21% less than men on average.*

Audi is know for its storytelling adds, and this Super Bowl ad by Venables Bell & Partners didn’t disappoint. It’s always interesting when a brand takes a political stance, especially when it’s hard to work out whether the message is genuine or just jumping on the back on a current political issue. I like it, and I think it’s important for brands to make their political views public, so that the consumers know what they are putting their money towards.

Apple’s Priorities: Are Driverless Cars to Blame for the New MacBook Pro fail?

Apple has finally admitted that it is going to heavily invest in the self-driving car industry, wanting to utilise their software expertise. Despite safety and privacy concerns, Apple are wanting to have a head start on its competitors (e.g. UK’s first self-driving car Oxbotica) in what could be a highly profitable industry.
Not only did Paul Newman from Oxbotica turn a hacked Nissan Leaf into a system that can make any vehicle self-driving, Google have also tested a driverless car. However, in September, the Google car collided with another vehicle after the jumping a red light.

Uber also swiftly managed to get ahead of the game by testing ‘Ford Fusions’ in Pennsylvania, USA, whilst collaborating with Volvo to develop a driverless car.

Steve Kenner, Apple’s Director of Product Integrity said:

The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.
Executed properly under NHTSA’s guidance, automated vehicles have the potential to greatly enhance the human experience — to prevent millions of car crashes and thousands of fatalities each year and to give mobility to those without.

Could this be the reason for the half-arsed attempt at the new MacBook Pro? If Apple are wanting to invest their time and money into this new lucrative industry (it could be worth £900bn by 2025), will they have time for their original fanbase – creatives?
